Memphis Grizzlies President’s Personal Court

Memphis, TN

At right are two pictures of Jerry West’s personal court, taken on a rainy day in Memphis, TN. Jerry West is the new President of Basketball Operations for the Memphis Grizzlies (formerly Vancouver Grizzlies) NBA team.  The surface installation was done with Canadian Violet Novacrylic Novaplay and applied by Derrick Barton Tennis Construction.

The Derrick Barton Tennis Construction team is also participating in a local Memphis, Tennessee television show hosted by former UMASS coach, and current head coach for the University of Memphis, John Calipari, to promote their basketball installations and Novacrylic products.

Congratulations and thank you to Mark Bran, Eric Bran and the Derrick Barton Tennis Construction team for this installation and for all your hard work promoting and installing Novacrylic products in the Tennessee area.

New Director of Operations

Team Nova is pleased to announce the addition of David Commito (right) to the position of Director of Operations. David comes to Nova Sports USA with over twenty years of acrylic chemistry and production experience. He will be responsible for overseeing production, quality control and development of new products.

"This is an exciting addition to our team," said Nova's Director of Marketing, Robert Righter. "Our rapid growth in recent years has challenged our ability to provide great service to our customers on a consistent basis, and our top priority has been to achieve the highest possible level of service and quality. I am confident that under David's leadership and technical expertise, we will manufacture the highest quality products found anywhere."

David will be working closely with Jeff Righter, team Nova's General Manager, during the next few months as Jeff’s role will become less involved. Jeff has started a new business selling plastic pallets and material handling supplies. Please join us in wishing Jeff the best of luck in his future endeavors!

USTC & TBA Technical Meeting

We had great fun at the technical meeting this year. Held in Orlando, FL from Dec. 7-9, 2002, we ran into many old and new friends!

Long time Novacrylic distributor for Russia, Star Dreams, has sent us these advertisements from Russian publications. At far right, the ad reads “If You Want Quality, Ask For Nova”. We are very happy that Star Dreams (and other international distributors) are continuing to promote Novacrylic products worldwide. Keep up the great work!

Mr. Konrad Sobecki, Director and President of TAMEX, S.A. (our exclusive distributor for Poland) proudly displays the Novacrylic logo at the AWF Wroctaw Academy of Physical Education where there are three indoor tennis courts surfaced with the Ultracushion system.

Jose Lizardo of Pop-Sport International, our exclusive distributor for the Philippines, sent in these pictures. At right is the Makati Sports Club, an exclusive members only club in Makati City, Philippines which they surfaced with Combination surface. Ben’s Corner

It’s Tuesday and I must be in my office. Just kidding. I am at the office for what seems like the first day since New Years. It feels good. Last year ended as a so/so year sales wise. We did about the same volume as the year before. That’s not what I expected. Especially since the first half was the best we ever had. Folks tell me not to complain. Most companies would be happy to have broken even in 2002.

In my last article, I mentioned that steps would be taken to get a better handle on quality control. We have begun this process and I am confident that we have corrected that situation. Some of the action will be covered elsewhere in this newsletter. You will see a positive difference this year.

The pace is starting to build towards spring. Our production equipment is undergoing preventative maintenance, tuning and calibration. Production schedules are in the process of formulation. New procedures are being established to insure more accuracy in inventory and shipping. It’s almost like preparing to open a new show or concert.

Jeff’s career change leaves me with mixed emotions. It was Jeff who encouraged me to start Nova Sports. He offered to work for nothing until we got going. Along with Ruth, Jeff and I created this company. He developed many of our products and was dedicated to producing the very best materials available anywhere. When we decided to move, Jeff designed the facility, ordered the equipment and got us up and running. We have been told that ours is the best acrylic sport surface production facility anywhere.

Jeff has been talking about doing something different for several years. He really doesn’t enjoy running a production facility. His new venture is a company called U.S. Plastic Pallets. He’s distributing plastic pallets and some other specialized plastic items. Nova has provided him with office and warehousing space in our building. This means that he is available to us for consultation as needed. He continues to be enormously interested in Nova Sports both as a founder and stockholder. We all wish him success in his venture and are committed to assisting him in anyway we can.

I do not have any kind of feeling regarding pricing for this year. Acrylics have advanced about 7 percent. So far, there have not been any other significant increases in raw materials. Petroleum prices continue to escalate. This may impact some raw material prices and will surely increase freight costs both in and outbound. At this time Nova’s prices shall remain unchanged. I have no idea how long we will be able to maintain these prices.

We are forced to initiate a charge for palletizing. Our plan is to refund the pallet charge when the pallets are returned to us freight prepaid. You will be informed of the details when this plan is initiated. As always, thanks for your business over the years. I Hope you have the best year ever. Please do not hesitate to ask us for whatever we may do to help you succeed in your surfacing efforts.

  Tech Tips:

1. When mixing Novabond acrylic patch mix, or Novabond Slurry mix, make sure that you are using Type 1 Portland cement. You will have problems if you use Type 2 Portland cement, or quick drying Portland cement.

2. Replace worn squeegee blades. You will find the yields will be better.
